Factory Ordering a Car? These Are Wait Times We’re Seeing in 2024

What vehicle are you interested in?

Last updated Mar 1, 2024

We track new car inventory monthly, and it’s been encouraging to see automakers like Ford and Toyota having more cars shipped to dealers. Still, automakers are selling every car they can make. With that said, more drivers are placing factory orders for vehicle builds that might not arrive until well into next year, or worse. Here’s how long car buyers are waiting for the vehicle they want. We want to send a special thank you to CarEdge Coach Mario for sharing this update with our audience!

Important note: These times are strictly for factory ordered cars. Many of these models are now available on dealer lots.

Kia and Hyundai Wait Times

Kia and Hyundai wait times

Hyundai Motors owns 51% of Kia, and the two Korean automakers have grown increasingly close over the past decade. Today, many of their vehicles share components, and therefore have been similarly impacted by supply chain constraints.

These are the factory order wait times our team of Car Coaches is hearing in 2024:

  • IONIQ 5 – 3 months for factory orders
  • Elantra (some trims) – 2 to 4 months
  • Accent – 2 to 3 months
  • Kia Sportage – 2 to 3 months
  • Kia Telluride – 2 to 3 months

Subaru Wait Times

Right now, buyers placing orders for a Subaru are regularly being told that the wait time for delivery will be between one and four months, and in some cases longer. Subaru was hit hard by the chip shortage, and has yet to pull out of the slump.

In general, 2-3 months wait can be expected for any custom-ordered Subaru in 2024. Here are some additional details from what CarEdge Coaches are seeing:

  • Ascent: 1-4 months
  • Crosstrek: 1-3 months
  • Forester: 1-2 months
  • Impreza: 1-3 months
  • Legacy: 1-3 months

Toyota Factory Order Wait Times

How long you should expect to wait depends on the Toyota model and spec that you want. For Toyota deliveries, you’ll be looking for an available allocation rather than a custom order. For Toyota hybrids and plug-in hybrids, wait times are generally much longer.

In 2024, most Toyota models no longer have long waitlists for an available allocation, with the exceptions being the Prius, GR86, GR Corolla, Grand Highlander Hybrid, Land Cruiser, Sienna, Supra M/T and Spec Edition TRD Pros. For these models, you can expect to wait 3-4 months for an allocation that’s not already spoken for.

Honda Wait Times

On average, Honda factory orders (or allocations) placed today can expect a short wait before delivery, generally less than two months. The only remaining Honda models with inventory constraints are the Civic Si and Civic Type R.

Otherwise, these are the Honda factory order wait times we’re seeing in 2024:

Accord: Immediate
Civic: 1-2 months
CR-V: 1-2 months
CR-V Hybrid: 2-3 months
Odyssey: 1-2 months
Pilot: 1-2 months
Ridgeline: Immediate

2024 Honda Prologue

In 2024, the Honda Prologue electric crossover will arrive. Pre-orders are expected to open soon, so keep an eye out for that if you want to be first on the list for this GM-built Honda EV. It will qualify for at least half of the new EV tax credit

Ram and Jeep Wait Times

For Jeep and Ram factory orders, wait times depend on what model and trim you want. Don’t forget that these two brands have the highest new car inventory in the industry right now, so lot inventory is especially negotiable. Don’t expect the same negotiability with Ram and Jeep factory orders.

These are the Ram truck factory wait times our team is encountering in 2024:

Ram 1500: 2-3 months
Ram Super Duty: 3-5 months
Jeep factory orders: 8 – 10 weeks

Ford Factory Orders Wait Times Faring Slightly Better

These are the Ford factory order wait times we’re seeing this year:

Bronco: 6-9 months

Ford F-150: 5-6 month wait time for higher trims (King Ranch, Tremor, Platinum), less than 3 months on XL, XLT and Lariat
F-250: 2-3 months
F-350: 2-3 months
Mustang: 3 months

What do you forecast in regard to used PHEV vehicles as we reach January 1 and rebates become available for the Ford Fusion Energi and the Chevy Volt? Will this increase or decrease their sale price?

Hello! Based on current market conditions and trends (which may be quite different in January as used car prices begin to fall), I expect PHEV and full BEV prices to remain elevated while used ICE vehicles fall. With a price cap of $25k built into the used EV and PHEV tax credit, expect to see a lot of used, older PHEVs and EVs for $24,900.

I ordered a Ford Expedition in March, it’s still not even built. My friend ordered a Dodge Charger in August, it was built last week and is in transit for delivery. How can Ford be running 8 MONTHS slower than Dodge??? What the heck are they doing over there at Ford?

We just ordered a 2023 Ford Escape Platinum Hybrid FWD. The dealer quoted us a wait of just 8-10 weeks. We’ll see how it goes. I called the marketing department to see if they have any photos available, as the ordering process still shows the 2022 model. All I’ve seen so far is spy videos on YouTube. If you have any other ideas on how to find what it actually looks like, I’d be thankful.

Regarding Ford Wait Times: I’m not sure that 4-6 months is accurate. I ordered a Bronco on 22 December 2021 and my vehicle started production recently on 11 October 2022. With final assembly and then delivery to my dealer, I’m looking at about 11 months wait time in total. In my production week alone, 44 fellow Bronco have self-reported wait times from 200-400 days since they ordered their Bronco’s. While Ford does seem to be working hard to complete Manufacturing Year (MY) 22 builds, we are far from 4-6 weeks away f wait time.

Thanks for sharing! Our estimate is for new factory orders placed today. It will vary from model to model, but this is our estimate from the information we’ve gathered from recent buyers placing orders.

I think the estimate for US Subaru factory orders are way off. I placed an order for an Outback at the beginning of August and have just learned that it has reached the first point in the US. It means it has just been built and might be at the railyards for shipping to the westcoast of Canada. Might get by end of Jan. 2024. So possibly 6 months wait. I understand from the dealer that it is similar for other models built in the US.
